This is the End and the endless jokes about rape

Let’s talk about This is the End.

It’s celebrity rpf (Apocalypse AU) and whatever, the beginning of the movie is sort of fun, with a lot of cameos and celebrities running around partying.

Then there’s the rapture and while no celebrities go to heaven, a whole bunch of them get thrown into a pit of fire, leaving these six:

They hang around James Franco’s house, being awful to each other and wasting their precious food and water.

But then, we get a reappearance of the only named woman* to survive the apocalypse:

Emma Watson, Harry Potter alum, survives the apocalypse and fights her way back into Franco’s house. While she’s given a moment to rest, the “good” guy of the group, Jay Baruchel, tells the guys he’s worried she’ll be worried about rape, since she’s the lone female in the house. The other guys are horrified he’d even suggest that, because she’s “like a little sister” to them.

She overhears, is properly horrified, and decides to go back into the raging hellfires of post-apoc LA rather than stay with these six potential rapists. She attacks them with that ax, takes all their water, and leaves, never to be seen again.

Meanwhile, these guys? Play rape for laughs for the rest of the movie.

Franco later admits to having sex with Lindsay Lohan while she’s too fucked up to realize he isn’t Jake Gyllenhaal. He still almost goes to heaven, but is subsequently not allowed to be because he brags to the cannibals. Not because he had sex with someone who couldn’t give consent, but for being smug.

Seth Rogen talks about his childhood and being tittyfucked by bullies. It was traumatic enough that when someone suggests a stranger might do that to the actors, he grabs his chest. Naturally, this comes up again and again when Jonah Hill is possessed.

Hill prays to God, smugly, saying mean things about “good guy” Jay, and is subsequently raped by the devil.

And Danny McBride, who’s banished from the house at the end of the second act, reappears at the end as a leader of cannibals (nevermind that most of the world is dead, so there’s plenty of food to go around) and has with him a sex slave: Channing Tatum, forced into a skimpy outfit, on a leash.

Oh yeah, and McBride admits to raping him!

Gross. The movie is gross.

And EMMA WAS RIGHT TO BE WORRIED. Unless Tatum, former stripper, and Lohan, current drug user, are BAD and Emma is GOOD and therefore doesn’t have to worry.

But it gets even better.

It’s a little strange, narratively, that we never see Emma Watson again. Usually you would, in most movies.

There’s a reason for that:

tumblr user sleazzyweasley posted a now-deleted post about Emma leaving the set:

So Emma had already filmed a scene last week at “James Franco’s party” and was coming back Wednesday and Thursday to film another scene with Channing Tatum, Danny McBride, Seth Rogan, Franco and Jay Baruchel.

The scene was as raunchy as it could be. Seth, Franco and Kay are kneeling on the ground with a few “cannibals” over them (that’s me) waiting to eat them as McBride comes out of an RV as our “king” with Channing Tatum on a leash in only a thong.

Emma knew he was going to be in a thong and everyone knows he used to be a stripper. So things were starting to get raunchy. Emma steps on set and looks at the scene and all of us in it and kind of has a freak out moment. Before we started to film she stormed off set with her publicist and Seth was saying what happened what’s wrong with Emma? Then she came back and filmed about 3 minutes of the scene.

During the scene Channing decided to do some of his breakdancing in front of her but alas he was in nothing but a thong.

So Emma storms off set. Everyone’s like WTF where is she going? She walks all the way down the street. So we wrapped the night 5 minutes later.

Came back last night and found out she quit because she the scene was too raunchy and she was really pissed that Channing was drinking while filming. He was obviously smoking weed as well.

But who can blame her right? She has a good image to uphold. But her quitting made last night filled with Emma jokes.

The ground was wet and muddy and Channing said we were stepping in Emma’s tears.

This was later confirmed in Interview magazine, with an interview between Mila Kunis and Franco:

JAMES FRANCO: So a funny thing happened on this movie I’m doing down here in New Orleans that made me think of you. The movie is a comedy, but it’s kind of an outrageous one, and this actress—I won’t say who, but she had a smaller role in the film—walked off the movie in the middle of a scene.

So we have a movie with very little female representation, and a FUCK TON of rape jokes, and when an actress felt uncomfortable on set? She advocates for herself, despite being a decade younger than those guys, and the actors proceed to make fun of her and leak information about it in the press. Given that there’s only three actresses in the film, Franco, and only one of them doesn’t die at the party, who the hell else would you be talking about?

Just a gross movie all around.

*there are only two other female celebrities: Mindy Kaling, who talks about wanting to bang Michael Cera, and Rihanna, who punches Cera and then sings along with the group about panties
